The story behind this piece
The twelve women of this self-help group used to sell raw bamboo poles to a trader for ₹18 each. He sold the baskets he made from them for ₹400.
In 2022 they borrowed ₹40,000 between them, bought their own splitting tools, and decided the value addition would happen in their own courtyard.
Bamboo is cut only in the waning moon — the Santhal calendar says the culm holds less sugar then, and insects leave it alone. It is old knowledge that no chemical treatment has improved upon.
Buying this set is not charity. It is the market finally paying the person who did the work.
How it's made
- 1Muli bamboo is harvested in the waning moon and cured for 10 days.
- 2Culms are split by hand into fine, even strips.
- 3Each basket is coil-woven — roughly 5 hours of work per piece.
- 4Finished with a natural oil rub. No varnish, no plastic.
